This is a heartbreaking book, but a page turner at the same time. I felt so sorry for poor Will. The author did a wonderful job telling this story! And, if you happen to be from Alabama, you will enjoy the local references throughout the book.
I thought the Author did a great job of developing the characters in this book. I felt Will's sadness and empathized with him. This book is genuinely about a generation of people who were not publically aware of abuse like we are now through the media and education, even though it did happen and was overlooked. Hopefully, this book is a testament to that time and moving forward.
Lauren Greene has the inate ability to make the reader truely empathize and understand the duality of living inside an abusive household. My heart broke over and over for Will and how his life was shattered and changed after the loss of his mother.
I love books that take place in the real world!!! The world of a child is brought to life, the innocence and error in their thinking..... How we as adults still cling to what we 'know' to be truth.
The characters came alive for me in this novel. Will, Lulu, Miz Leigh, Pop are so wonderfully described that they remain etched in my mind. In fact, since I finished the novel, I continue to think about them. Aptly titled, this novel is heartbreaking and tragic but I found, curiously, that this novel sends a positive message about the triumph of a little boy's spirit over unspeakable grief and abuse. This is a very good book and I highly recommend it. Looking forward to the next novel from this author.
I couldn't put this book down. I just had to know what happened to William. I love that one of the characters had a health condition that was practically unheard of in the period this book was written. The author makes it as common as freckles. Well done! I want to take this child home with me and just love him. There was definitely a devil in the midst. Well written and I am looking forward to the sequel.

His father thought the devil was in him and through his grief and alcohol he would beat him to rid the devil. The boy felt guilty and blamed himself. After years of this happening he found two people to love him as their own and went on to have his own family.
