Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes in the police? What bizarre 999 calls are made to the emergency services? Why can wearing two pairs of socks make you a suspect? What is the link between police and vampires? Which Royal arrest never made news headlines? What covert sign do officers make when they no longer wish to talk to you? After successful careers in both the military and business, John Donoghue realised that the higher you get in any organisation, the less fun you have. So, after handing back his expense account and company car, he joined the police in search of excitement and thrills... and discovered some surprising answers to these puzzling questions. PC John Donoghue reveals all in his fascinating and hilarious true account of a year in the life of a front line response officer. Names and places have been changed to protect the guilty... but if you call the police, maybe, just maybe, it could be Police Constable John Donoghue turning up at your door. This book will appeal to anyone interested in crime and police, as well as fans of autobiographies and humour.

Police Crime 999 – The True Story of a Front Line Officer eBook Donoghue John

I gave this five stars because every time I picked it up and read it, I laughed out loud. That was worth the price of admission and for me, the sign of a good book. There were a few words I was unfamiliar with, living in the USA, but that didn't hinder the humor that is woven throughout it. Most cops develop a strange sense of humor to help them deal with the unpleasant things the job exposes them to. This book shows that in action. I've seen our society from behind a badge, and after reading this book, I realize that there are universal things the police on both sides of the ocean see, and common ways of looking at and dealing with them. I will be reading his other books as well!

Police Crime 999 – The True Story of a Front Line Officer eBook Donoghue John Reviews

This humorous memoir written by a serving police officer of the Metropolitan Police (Scotland Yard) is at once insightful, irreverent, empathetic and raucous. Author John Donoghue manages to find humor even in the midst of horrific situations. It's a defense mechanism, of course, a way to insulate oneself from the terror and tragedy, to continue forward and yet not fall down. As he writes "I guess that's where the black humor comes from. It's either make a joke about things or go back home and lie down in a darkened room and listen to whale music." Humor is also a way to insulate yourself from the hatred and injustice heaped upon your head like hot coals. But there are also times when there's nothing to do but face things head on, such as when having to notify a man's family that he's dead, the victim of his own reckless driving. "When you attend and incident like that, sometimes the humour in he job just deserts you." The chronicle of his misadventures as he serves as the commander of a patrol unit covers a year, and within that year he witnesses the heights of hilarity and human foolishness and the black depths of despair. When he finishes it, he is not quite the same person as he started "I hadn't yet reached the stage where I stared into the abyss and the abyss stared back at me and then looked away in shame. However, in some way I felt I'd lost what was left of my innocence--that in some ways life had maybe lost a bit of its mystery. Dealing with the worst that society can offer certainly makes you more cynical." And yet..."I'd fitted a lifetime of new adventure into just one year, and had so many good laughs my sides ached, had real job satisfaction and felt some genuine camaraderie again." Obviously, since we're dealing with a mostly chronological and episodic account of true events, there is no "plot," but there is a great deal of character growth and change, a sense that we are dealing with very real people trying their utmost to make the best (for themselves and the public) out a series of bad situations. "A policeman's lot is not a happy one," goes the lament in "The Pirates of Penzance," but, as we derive from this book, it is one filled with hilarity and tragedy, pathos and despair, weariness and excitement, terror and apathy. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and I think it should appeal to those who also enjoy factual memoirs, written with a keen wit that is at times caustic, at times empathetic, at times frustrated, but always laced with optimism and hope, even when the foibles of the public indicate the end of civilization as we know it is not far off...perhaps especially then.
This author has a way with words and had me belly laughing throughout this book. He makes the most dangerous situation hilarious . A great example of how English constables differ from our American police officers .
The author shares his experiences as a constable in England, dealing with all manner of riff-raff, not to mention the criminals, and does so with great humor and even a bit of wisdom. I find myself thinking how different many of his criminal encounters would be if he were policing in the U.S. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
It seems that regardless of where they are from, Cops tell the best stories, and Mr. Donoghue is an excellent storyteller. He spins a truthful tale that is both hysterical to the point of belly ache, and sad to the point of tears. Some minor editing issues, or is it just “Brit Speak”? Mr. Donoghue has a mild obsession that his work will end up as a coaster or propping up that wobbling table. But Really! I mean, who would do that to a perfectly good ?
Just finished this, the second John Donoghue book I've read. Thoroughly enjoyed it even more than the first one (which I also liked very much)! Here in America the differences in the Police are more extensive than I expected, especially where guns are concerned. As an advocate of gun control I find it fascinating that Police in the UK aren't armed. We could learn a lot from our neighbors across the pond! In addition to learning what it's actually like to work in law enforcement in Britain, Mr. Donoghue fills the pages with anecdotes from his experiences with the local criminals to time spent with his colleagues. I love the way this author writes! He has a way of letting you in and making you a part of his world. The humor runs from laugh out loud to subtle (so pay attention) and there are plenty of tender moments in between. I highly recommend this book and I have already begun reading John Donoghue's next book!
I never laughed out loud while reading until I found John Donoghue's books!! If you're needing a little holiday from life, this is the book for you! My only warning Don't drink hot beverages while reading this book...you'll be spewing your cuppa everywhere and your dogs/cats won't find it funny in the least! This is the second book of his I've read, and the third is on order...how wonderful to find an author, who not only entertains, but educates through his own special brand of "wicked smart" sense of humour, and intelligence! Traveling in the UK, or prior Police experience will just add to the page by page sparkle of this book but neither are necessary to find yourself pulled away from the humdrum of life, and plunked down into the heart stopping, can't breathe laughter of a year in the life of a front line officer! If you need to laugh, if you like to laugh, then this book is the one for you! I sincerely would have given it 10 stars, so in your mind double my stars while you consider buying this wonderful book!!
